Spring training for the Cubs is in full swing, and that means an influx of fans and visitors in the Mesa, Tempe and Scottsdale areas. This spring training season is attracting even more attention because of the new stadium that has been built, dubbed Cubs Park. The new park is the largest in the Cactus League with a seating capacity of 15,000 people. For this reason, this spring training season is anticipating a higher turnout because the park is an attraction in itself! While this is a positive for the Mesa economy, this also means that DUIs have the potential to go through the roof; especially with Chicago fans that are used to a more advanced public transportation system back home and don’t usually have to worry about driving after a game.
DUIs are expensive: Arizona law requires that first-time DUI offenders spend 10 days in jail, but are also switching to home detention programs with electronic monitoring paid for by the defendants. This is on top of other fees the defendant must pay for DUIs.
License Suspension: Your license can get suspended anywhere from 90-360 days.
Extreme DUI: If your blood alcohol level is 0.15 or higher within two hours of driving, you are considered an “Extreme DUI.” You will be convicted of a criminal misdemeanor and charged a hefty fine.
Arizona Laws: Arizona has the toughest DUI laws in the country.
